Abgeordentenhaus des Deutschen Bundestages (German MPs’ office building)

The building now used by the UN was built in 1965 as a steel skeleton high-rise. The 32-storey, 114m high building on the banks of the Rhine is a real landmark and in the vernacular called “Langer Eugen“ (referring to the then Speaker, Eugen Gerstenmaier).
Given that Bonn was only thought (and turned out) to be a temporary capital, even the invitation to tender envisaged a flexible use of the building.
For reasons of space, a vertical structure to accommodate the 450 MPs and their staff was thus only logical.
The building is borne by a steel skeleton with a span of 7.5 x 7.5 metres.
To shade the expansive glazing from the sun, the facade has a curtain of steel tubes and sun shading elements. This is what lends the facade its very own lightness and deep structure.
The listed building was carefully renovated from 2002 to 2006 and now accommodates about 600 UN staff.
