Freiheit Westerholt is on the northern edge of the Ruhr area. About 400 people live in the ca. 6.5 hectare historical precincts, which comprises Schloss Westerholt (the palace), the village and the rampart ring zone. The name of the town was first mentioned in writing in 1047 and the house of the Counts of Westerholt in 1193.
The castle precincts developed around the parish church St. Martini, first mentioned in 1310. As can still be seen today, the village was fortified with a rampart and moats. In the north, it could be accessed through the “Freiheitspforte” gate, demolished in 1873, and in the south-east through the extant “Mühlpforte”.
The former castle (now the above-mentioned palace) and the village in front of it, which make up Freiheit Westerholt, are one of the best preserved examples of medieval towns formed from formerly very numerous Westphalian castle and village precincts.
The almost completely preserved and multi-faceted precincts are unique in the Ruhr area. The precincts in their entirety have been listed, and of the ca. 80 well preserved buildings 58 half-timbered houses have been listed as individual objects, too.
