The HQ of Stadtwerke Witten GmbH built in 1992/1993 is characterised by a striking location at the intersection of Westfalenstraße/ Dortmunder Straße and marks the urbanistic space of an otherwise heterogeneously used area.
The winner of the first prize of a competition, Prof. Jörg Friedrich, Hamburg/ Düsseldorf, was able to integrate an unspectacular old building into a new building by combining the block with a uniform brick/glass structure over two storeys and deliberately upgrading the inner block with its garden and inner courtyard as a “joint work yard”. The most striking part of the complex is an oval above the two-storey base structure, featuring three more storeys for admin and conference and board rooms. The fanlighted and zinc-coated oval is borne by columns and sort of hovers above the entrance hall suffused with light and framed by galleries. Glass is the dominant material of the complex, conveying transparency, openness and accessibility and making the substance more “modest” in terms of size perceived. This is in line with how Stadtwerke GmbH as a public institution and energy company wants to present itself to the local population.
