How does one live, embedded in the historic context of Birschel’s Mill and with a view overlooking the countryside? In a fantastic location, deemed the architect. With a view over the Ruhr area as far as the former Henrichshütte steelworks, the property was once part of the orchard of the historic mill and later became the beer garden of the “Bella Riva” villa, a popular excursion spot at the turn of the century.
The challenge was to use the construction of a singlefamily house to create a dialogue between the view over the countryside, the property’s century-old copper beech tree, and the architectural contrast of old and new. The house with its studio was built in the clear and unostentatious geometry of the "Neues Bauen" style.
House and studio occupy a total floor area of 213 m². Situated at the back of the property is a large workshop building 60 m² in size. Because of its terrific location on the bank of the Ruhr river, the dining, kitchen and living areas were built as an extremely open and flowing ensemble of rooms with a staircase in the middle of the floor plan and a large skylight overhead. Two generously-proportioned underslung balconies on the top floor offer an opportunity to step into the open air and enjoy the view into the Ruhr valley. The studio is directly off the entrance area and provides space for exhibitions and for receiving visitors interested in art.
