The IG Metall trade union building was built in Bochum’s Westpark in 2004 and 2005.
The two north-south blocks are connected and accessed by and via a glass hall. Its massive functional structure with a perforated facade and bricks and steel provide a link to the place at which it stands and the coal and steel industry in the Ruhr area.
The support structure of the hall is a steel frame whose glass facade is borne by aluminium profiles. Other than the glass hall, all parts are capped by flat roofs. The glass hall features a glass scale roof with textile blinds.
The eastern block has nine floors and stands out through its 4.4m wide western cantilever. The west wing, however, has only four storeys and houses seminar rooms and event halls and a catering area, the latter facing Westpark.
The structure connects Alleestraße and Westpark. The 7m difference in height is made visible by a stairwell in the glass hall.
