The “Kunstmuseum des Erzbistums Köln”, founded in 1853 as “Diözesanmuseum Köln”, has borne the name "Kolumba" since 2004, indicating its new home. The new building had been in preparation for a long time and was opened in Cologne’s city centre on September 15, 2007. It is a triad of its location, its collection and its architecture. In this museum one can experience 2,000 years of occidental culture: In the arts the range extends from late antiquity to the present, in architecture it’s the interplay of the war ruins of the late Gothic church St Kolumba, the "Madonna in den Trümmern" chapel (1950), the unique archaeological excavation (1973-1976) and the new building planned by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor.
