This property of a very special kind is 13.95m above ground. In Westphalian Hamm, a penthouse was erected on top of an old air-raid shelter. The shelter as such is a historical document and unmodified as an urbanistic solitary building. The penthouse seems to hover above its bulky base. No wonder, as there is ca. 1m of space between the penthouse and the shelter which is illuminated at night.
This illuminated space accommodates all supply facilities. The house has glass floors through which you can see into the shelter.
One of the sides of the shelter is supposed to feature a waterfall. The house is heated by a storage fuel pellet burner. Warm water is supplied by a solar thermal system on the penthouse’s roof. A 500l cistern on the third floor of the shelter is used to support the supply with tap water in a regenerative fashion. In addition, the collected rainwater is used for the waterfall. During the summer, the cooler air from the lower floors of the shelter cools and ventilates the penthouse, which can thus do without an expensive ventilation system.
