Renovation and expansion of the Lichtburg building

This project is characterised by an interplay of a careful redevelopment of a structure under a preservation order and the new building of a modern entrance and development area for the adult education centre.
The Lichtburg, which with 1,250 places features the largest and perhaps most beautiful cinema hall in Germany, has not only been redeveloped in accordance with the preservation orders but technically modernised as well.
A new, smaller cinema hall has been added, as has a lounge and lobby.
The new building consists of two telescoped ashlars and serves the main development of the adult education centre. The full glazing of one ashlar makes for a “shop window of the adult education centre” facing Burgplatz and the shopping mile. The new building complements the existing structures and - a fairly heterogeneous use incl. cinema, adult education centre and shops notwithstanding - gives a uniform overall impression within the entire complex of buildings.
Furthermore, the integrated lighting concept is certainly of note, as it ranges from continuous Mikado lights inside to an illumination of the glass façade with alternating coloured lights outside.
