RömerMuseum Xanten

RömerMuseum in Xanten completes the protective building of the thermal baths erected in 1999 and thus shows the dimensions of the ancient baths.
The steel structure rests on the foundations of the porch of the ancient Roman thermal baths, the Basilica Thermarum.
This entrance hall was not only the largest room of the thermal baths, but at a floor space of 72 x 22m also the largest building of the then Roman colony.
The museum is of the same dimensions as the porch of the ancient thermal bath and also has no continuous storeys. Instead, the effect is created by its impressive height of 25m.
14 steel frames bear the museum building and allow a flexible suspension of the 300m long exhibition level that unfolds into the free space of the large hall as a system of ramps and platforms.
Vertical steel panels with a printed glass layer form the building’s facade and thus make for continuity with the pointillated glasses of the protective building of the ancient thermal baths.
Heat pumps and exchangers with 36 loops keep the museum cool in summer and warm in winter.
