Ruhr-Universität Bochum is the first post-war university. It was built on the outskirts of the city as a campus university.
A classic cross breaks down the 400 x 900 m into four square fields of approximately the same size. Each of these fields accommodates one related group of subjects: the mental concept thus having been expressed in the architecture.
At the cross’ point of intersection we find the dining hall and the “Audimax”. Pedestrian and car traffic have been separated; beneath the entire campus we find roads and there are many multi-storey car parks. All faculties can be reached on foot within 15 minutes.
The types and standards of the buildings were then in line with architectural concepts. They also allowed the university’s construction to be finished in time, that is, within ten years.
With about 30,000 students, Ruhr- Universität is one of the ten largest universities in Germany, and an entire “students’ town” for a population of 21,000 people was built simultaneously. In 2013 the buildings have been renovated.
