Stadttor Düsseldorf is an office and shopping house. It got its name from its structure of two “gate columns” of 16 storeys each which, in turn, bear three parapet storeys, thus forming a 75m tall gate. The building’s ground plan is a parallelogram, the “gate columns” accommodate the Rheinufertunnel entrance below. The hall formed by this specific shape is fully glazed and at a height of 56m one of the largest in Europe.
The overall office space is 27,000 sq m. What is remarkable about Stadttor is the combination of new technologies which save energy (costs). The facade, for example, consists of an outer full-glass shell, separated by the inner facade by 1.4m wide balconies. This facade structure ensures a natural ventilation of the offices all through the year. In winter, the building is heated with DH from the nearby Lausward power station. In summer, water circulating in a pipe system cools down the building.
This makes for 70% less energy costs than in fully air-conditioned buildings of the same kind.
