Wasserburg Lüttinghof

Burg Lüttinghof, in the north of Gelsenkirchen near Marl-Polsum, was first mentioned in documents on August 28, 1308. The Cologne archbishop therein reaffirmed the soccage of “castrum Luttekenhove“ being assigned to the von Flerke family near Polsum.
During the moated castle’s changeable history, the Cologne archbishop remains the supreme liege lord until 1805, when the Twickel zu Havixbeck family became the castle’s owners. In 1976, the City of Gelsenkirchen bought the now rather derelict castle, takes first constructive safety measures, but in 1986 assigned the castle to the Landschaftsverband Westfalen Lippe (regional authority).
From 1988, the LWL reconstructed the keep and rebuilt the outer bailey, which it used as restoration workshops until 2003. From 2005, the outer bailey has accommodated free-lancers’ offices and the Gelsenkirchen teacher training centre.
