Zeche Königsborn 3/4

The pit frame of the former Königsborn 3/4 pit built in 1928 can be seen from afar.
Its architect, Alfred Fischer, is one of the most important industrial architects of the Ruhr area, next to pit architect Fritz Schupp. From 1911 until when the Nazis fired him in 1933, he was head of Kunstgewerbeschule in Essen (later Folkwangschule).
The pit frame erected in the Königsborn 3/4 pit is now considered to be an important document of the historical industrial architectural development in the 1920s. It embodies the transition to functionalism and was the model for most modern pit frames.
Cultural historian Roland Günter describes the effect of this first frame not built as a hammer head but a cube thus: "In avant-garde symbolism, it receives steep continuous windows. They break up its centre and, above all, its corners (...). This design lends the frame a huge gesture, makes it colossally dynamic and lets it radiate into the air space."
