The waste incineration plant commissioned in 1996 is the most important element of the Abfallentsorgungszentrum Asdonkshof (waste disposal centre) in the Wesel district.
It consists of two independent incineration lines with downstream scrubbing and a turbine plant to generate power and district heat.
The incineration capacity stands at 16.6 tonnes of domestic waste per hour. In 2001 alone, this was an annual rate of more than 246,000 tonnes of waste.
The scrubbing system is exemplary, even in European terms. It much under-runs the legal limits for hazardous substances found in the plant’s flue gas. The turbine plant generates 123,000 MWh of electricity gross p.a., enough to supply more than 30,000 households.
The Abfallentsorgungszentrum also includes an upstream/sorting system in which recyclable waste is sorted out, an organic composting plant, a sewage sludge drying plant and slag treatment plants.
