The new housing estate with 177 council flats was built on the former site of a stoneware factory in the Ruhr valley on the outskirts of Bochum.
The long structures of the four to five-storey estate are arranged like a fan. The paths and greenery in between created interesting open spaces with narrowing and expanding zones.
Since the bulk of the parking spaces is to be found on parking decks below the buildings, the estate is largely free of cars. The flats on the ground floor are wheelchair-accessible, while the flats on the upper floors can be reached by the glass staircase and the open access balconies pointing north.
The façade is characterised by a white rendering and the use of wood for the window frames and the facing of the receded attic storeys.
Furthermore, cantilever balconies, staircases and access balconies differentiate the estate’s façades.
The planning also took account of ecological aspects. There is, for example, a rain water pond for the estate’s roof water, which is collected in open eaves and hetero-hydroscopic hollows for infiltration.
