The pedestrian and cycle bridge in Landschaftpark Mechtenberg has a span of 103m and crosses Hattinger Straße and two streams.
From afar, the bridge is reminiscent of an Asian bamboo structure. It was designed by architect Frei Otto, renowned for his roof for the Munich Olympia stadium. The main structure of the bridge consists of fanned-out steel boltels.
The boltels are connected by couplings that were specially developed for this bridge. A total of 1,300 such gussets makes for the required stability.
The boltels and all gussets were galvanised and the use of solid steel boltels prevents them from corroding on the inside.
At the fan feet, solid gusset plate structures join the individual boltels together. The load is discharged into exposed concrete pairs of pillars.
For a safe foundation, bored piles were sunk 25m deep into the ground.
