Colonius was finished in 1981 as a typical TV tower, that is, as a slim tubular reinforced concrete structure in accordance with the cantilever construction principle.
When it was finished Colonius was 252.9 metres tall. At the beginning of the 1990’s, the top was replaced by a longer one, since when its height has been 266 metres. This makes it North Rhine – Westphalia’s tallest TV tower.
At a height of 166m we find the three storey tower deck with its revolving restaurant. However, the deck has not been accessible to the public since 1992.
The tower located at the green belt is very close to the city and an important landmark. Just like telecommunications towers in other cities, Cologne’s Colonius has turned from a merely functional structure to a landmark of the city.
