The bungalow of the Federal Chancellor, planned as a home and a reception building, is embedded in the park around Palais Schaumburg and a wonderful example of post-war modern architecture.
Drawing upon Mies van der Rohe’s Barcelona-Pavilion as an example of modern architecture, the bungalow has a glazed steel skeleton structure and consists of two staggered square buildings with atriums.
The smaller part was supposed to accommodate the chancellor’s family, the larger was for representational purposes. The structure of the rooms is flexible; sliding and immersible walls allow various spatial situations.
The interior design includes high-quality materials like Roman travertine for the floors and Brazilian pine for the ceilings.
The building has been empty since 1999. Since 2007, its has been renovated and is now to be used as a venue for cultural and political events.
