The Museum Abteiberg consists of an exciting ensemble of buildings arranged around a square-like pedestrian area slightly below the Abteiberg knoll. In his plans, architect Hans Hollein drew upon the topographical situation he then took account of by arranging the ensemble on quite a few levels. He also drew upon the heterogeneous surrounding buildings, ranging from a Gothic choir to a multi-storey car park from the 1960s. There is now a clearly defined multi-faceted museum ensemble of various buildings. The admin tower, for example, reminds one of the high-rise buildings in the city, the tin sheet covered upper exhibition rooms with their shed roofs of the factory buildings of the Mönchengladbach textile factories and the entrance building made of white marble of the Acropolis. The complex appearance is reflected by the multifarious interior. The partly subterranean exhibition rooms are connected by a dense network of aisles, stairs and ramps. Instead of the usual tour through a museum, here the visitors are supposed to make their own discoveries.
