Musiktheater im Revier (MIR)

The theatre built at the end of the 1950s got much attention for its fusion of stage and auditorium in the large house and the total variability in the small one.
The structure is a large cube with a glass facade opening up toward the forecourt and allowing a glimpse of the foyer in front of the auditorium. This contrasts with the cube outside through its soft rolling shape and all seats provide a good view of the stage.
From the beginning, renowned artists were involved in the planning, for example Yves Klein, who designed the wall relief in the foyer of the large house, and Jean Tinguely, who designed the side walls of the foyer of the small house as a movable installation.
The large house has 1,040 seats, the small one 450.
The Musiktheater has been listed since 1997.
