Universität Witten/Herdecke was founded as a private university in 1983. Until the new building at Alfred-Herrhausen-Str. 50 was realised, the admin and seven departments and institutes were found at various Witten sites.
After a restricted architectural competition, the Stachowiak & Deterding firm from Dortmund was awarded the contract.
The central area is an almost 100m long glass-roofed hall that can be reached through a round foyer. The various units and wings are arranged around the entire hall and house the dining hall, cafeteria, lecture halls and offices.
The light plaster structure with its lavish air space, galleries and stairs makes for a relaxed and open working atmosphere.
For the involvement of the students and staff of the university in the planning and construction of the new building, in 1994 Universität Witten/ Herdecke got the “Demokratisches Bauen“ prize, (democratic construction).
