The 70m swing bridge in the Krefeld Rhine port was built in 1905 when the entire port was expanded. It is double arch bridge with a bearing arch made of riveted steel from the end support to the central pier and bridle cords from the V-shaped central support to the arch apexes.
The forged rails feature art nouveau ornaments. The swinging and lifting device in the central pier is still the original one.
The bridge is lifted by 11cm electro-hydraulically and then swung on the so-called “König“ by 90° so that two fairways are available. In case of a power cut, it can also be operated manually.
Since Krefeld Hafendrehbrücke is the only one of its design still in existence in Germany, it is of huge historico-technical importance as it attests to constructive steel and mechanical engineering at the beginning of the 20th century.
