Pumpwerk Westhofen

The hydro-electric plant was built in 1918-1922 and has been in operation almost unchanged. It still features its original piston pumps.
Here, the River Ruhr is dammed up by a complete weir system across a total of six weir fields. The DEW (Dortmunder Energie- und Wasserversorgung GmbH) run-of-river power station’s four turbines convert the run-of-river energy into mechanical energy for pumps. That’s why Dortmunders simply call it “Pumpwerk Westhofen”.
The attractive building is listed and has four turbines to cover a 5m fall.
