The motorway (A52) bridge crosses the Ruhr valley between Mülheim an der Ruhr-Mintard und Essen-Ickten, describing a flat arc with a horizontal radius of the curve of 3,000m.
The total effective span of 1,800m is broken down into 19 fields, with the widest span, the main span above the River Ruhr, at 126m. The highest road level is 65m above the River Ruhr.
The small box width of 7.5m made for the slim pylons.
The large number of elements of the same dimensions made for an economically very efficient construction of the steel superstructure. The two-year construction period ended on June 25, 1966.
The Ruhrtalbrücke is still one of the major post-war bridge construction projects in Europe.
