Underground station Lohring

U-Bahnhof Lohring is one of the largest pylon-free underground stations in Germany.
The underground concourse is 90m in length and was built in the mining tradition, i.e. tunnel-driven. It is almost 19m wide and about 14.5m high, one of the largest cross-sections ever thus built in Germany.
The architects’ primary objective was to preserve this space’s effect. The artist´s Eva-Maria Joeressen´s light installation aside, the ceiling does not feature any technical installation whatsoever. The two bent lines of light contrast with the straight tracks. The platforms of 550 sq m in total consists of glass on stilts, illuminated from below. The glass floor, in turn, consists of three 12mm laminated glass panes. For safety reasons, the uppermost’s surface is sand-melted.
The walls are covered with grey-greenish aluminium sheets, for noise control reasons finely perforated all over. A special anodisation of the aluminium makes the shade change in accordance with the observer’s position.
At the end of the platform, there is a red-enamelled wall with an inserted cross of light, “reflecting” the crossroads above in an abstract manner.
