After the competition had been won by Böge Lindner Architekten in 2000, in 2004 the new central fire and ambulance station was opened at the Gelsenkirchen Buer motorway exit as one of five such sites.
The site accommodates the municipal fire brigade, the voluntary fire brigade and the ambulance services. Since the 1980s, the Gelsenkirchen fire service has included a youth fire brigade, assigned to the voluntary branch.
The powerful solitary building’s almost square shape lends the site its structural identity.
The architects used various materials for the structure. The striking sculpture developed from a combination of anthracite pre-cast concrete slabs and the flush golden aluminium-glass facade.
