Eleven years after the architects’ competition, the Kunstsammlung NRW was opened in 1986. The abbreviation “K20“ means “Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts“ (20th century art) and separates the collection from its “K21” extension, having been accommodated in the Ständehaus since 2001.
The building at Grabbeplatz convinces through its urbanistically successful integration with its elegant arch facing Grabbeplatz and its razor-like blending with the smooth wall at Heinrich-Heine-Allee.
The dark black-gleaming granite facade is only partially interrupted at the main bend by a row of windows up to three storeys high and framed in white.
The interior of rooms of various sizes is lit through a shed roof.
On the ground floor we have an exhibition hall of unrivalled dimensions: 50m in length, 12.5m in width and 12m in height.
