From the very beginning planned to contrast with the “Dreischeibenhaus“, the Düsseldorf Schauspielhaus is characterised by a horizontal layering and rolling, organic shapes.
The walls on the ground floor are partly made of coarsely lagged exposed concrete; the remainder of the facade is covered with white plastic panels. Due to the small number of windows, the front gives a rather closed impression, while down toward Hofgarten, the building’s huge glass surface seems to open it up.
There are two theatres to be found in the Schauspielhaus: the large one with about 900 seats and the flexible small one with 192 to 300 seats.
