Schillerpark

Residential high-rises were built in many places in the 1970s to deal with the housing shortage prevalent at the time, although this was done without averting the urban fabric. Just 20 years later, needs had drastically changed. Small areas in the northern Ruhr area in particular suffered not only from a declining population but also in some cases from these “eyesores”. The Schillerpark high-rise estate at the edge of Oer-Erkenschwick’s inner city stood in stark contrast to smaller-scale residential structures elsewhere in the city.
Thanks to the partial dismantling of this residential complex, Schillerpark has now become a showcase project. The good infrastructure and long-term tenants who are committed to the location provided ideal preconditions for implementing a plan with an investment volume of around 7.7 million Euros. As part of the “Stadtumbau West” development programme, the tallest single buildings at the centre of each of the three star-shaped complexes were dismantled, while the other buildings were scaled back from eight storeys to a maximum of five and the number of residential units reduced from 221 to 120. Various upvaluation strategies were also implemented to create both a successful neighbourhood in terms of urban development and affordable, comfortable flats for all the generations living in it. Arriving on foot, you pass through a central park and individually designed strips of parkland to reach the buildings. This barrier-free, park-like environment also provides a location for recreation and for maintaining neighbourly contacts.
